Role: Optical Design Engineer

What You’ll Be Doing
Reporting into the Program Manager of the Edinburgh Instruments’ Development Department, the Optical Design Engineer’s primary task is the design and optimisation of a variety of optical components for instrumentation in the field of optical spectroscopy
Key responsibilities will include:
- Optical design and optimisation of instrumentation for optical spectroscopy – using ray tracing software and other modern tools.
- Working together with mechanical and electronic design teams to design prototypes.
- Evaluation of prototypes
- Support to our Operations and Application teams.
What You’ll Need to Bring
- Educated to degree level, preferably an MSc or PhD, in physics, optics, optical engineering or another related discipline.
- Experience of all areas of optical design, knowledge of ray-tracing software, preferably Zemax
- An understanding of optical spectroscopy techniques such as photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, and Microscopy is required.
- Enthusiasm, confidence, and the ability to communicate with colleagues across mechanical, firmware and software engineering.
- Responsiveness and focus, combined with attention to detail are essential.
- Self-motivated, able to work under pressure, with proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision as well as part of a larger team.
